Artist Talk: Jennifer Lauren

Jennifer Lauren is an artist filmmaker whose practice spans fine art, film and writing. Lauren graduated from the Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. Their UK solo exhibitions were held at Turf Projects, Primary and Kingsgate workshops. Public art projects and performances were programmed at ICA, South London Gallery, Somerset House and The Showroom, and upcoming at Olympia Gallery (New York) and Matt’s Gallery (London).   

They are a Film London Lodestar Artist Filmmaker, and BAFTA Connect Member. Their work has received support through grants from the Arts Council England, Stuart Croft Foundation, Elephant Trust and Durham Wharf Foundation. Lauren was part of the 76th class of the Skowhegan School of Painting and  

Sculpture (2022) and We Are Parable x Channel 4’s scheme Momentum for black British filmmakers (2022). Additional residencies and fellowships include Hospitafield, Kingsgate Workshops, FLAMIN Fellowship, Chisenhale, Fundación Botín, and British Council for Qatar UK Year of Culture.   

Their short film ‘TEETH’ (2021) won ‘Best Screenplay’ at SOUL Fest and was nominated for ‘Best Experimental Short’ at Blackstar Film Festival. Their work has also screened in competition at festivals, including Alchemy, RIDM, EMAF, Kasseler Dokfest, and British Shorts Berlin. Lauren is a co-director of not/nowhere, a black-led analogue filmmaking cooperative, and a Senior Tutor at Ruskin School of Art (University of Oxford).
